Podcasts for Professionals!

Our professional issues class at Texas Christian University has put together some podcasts dealing with professional issues faced by speech language pathologists. These are not all directly about children with hearing loss - but they are issues that professionals who work with these children will face! Check them out here or via the CHLLD lab Facebook page!

Poverty and language development interact to affect outcomes for children. Camille and Katie address some of those issues here (and talk to a professional promoting literacy in laundry mats!)

How might this relate to hearing loss? Many children with hearing loss (like many children without hearing loss) face issues of poverty in addition to their other challenges. We should all be having conversations about how poverty might affect outcomes for children during language learning experiences.

What if a child is also bilingual? Samantha and Nicole explore service provision to bilingual children, particular through the lens of families without abundant supports or resources.

How might this relate to hearing loss? Increasing numbers of children with hearing loss come from minority-language homes, and within the United States, that means many children will grow up to be bilingual language users. We need to talk about how bilingualism affects outcomes as well!

Considering a Clinical Fellowship Year Abroad? Molly and Amy talk with a new graduate going to Uganda for a clinical fellowship year.

How might this relate to hearing loss? Hearing loss is clearly a global issue, and affects children in many parts of the world. Organizations like the Global Foundation for children with hearing loss http://www.childrenwithhearingloss.org/index.shtml address the needs faced by countries that are developing programs to help children with hearing loss. Looking for a great way to understand global needs of children with hearing loss? A CFY experience abroad might help!

Productivity requirements and ethical considerations. Megan and Madison explore productivity requirements in Skilled Nursing Facilities with Dr. Teresa Drulia.

How might this relate to hearing loss? Speech language pathologists in most settings face productivity requirements in some way or another. Productive, thoughtful conversations about ethics and service provision requirements benefit everyone.

Should interventionists use screens in provision of therapy? Miles and Lucy talk with Dr. Hofacer about brain development and how screens might affect (or not affect) outcomes.

How might this relate to hearing loss? More and more, we see technology integrated into daily life. Screen time likely affects development for all children, so we need to consider how hearing loss and screens might interact.

What about people who are thinking about becoming speech-language pathologists? Have you heard of the "bottleneck effect?" Holly and Aubrey explore issues related to transitioning from the undergraduate to graduate level of speech-language pathology.

How might this relate to hearing loss? Any SLP you may work with was once a graduate student! The bottleneck potentially affects the number (and characteristics of) providers available to serve children post-graduation.
